Neeley urges swift community action after weekend violence

FLINT — State Rep. Sheldon Neeley (D-Flint) urged community leaders in Flint today to take swift action in the wake of several violent crimes that occurred over the weekend, including a man who was shot adjacent to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Flint where he later died. In early July, Rep. Neeley called for the creation of a community Major Crimes Task Force to address the rise in gun-related violence the city has experienced in recent months. In response to recent violent crimes, Rep. Neeley issued the following statement:

“The families of Flint cannot afford to wait a single day more for us to get serious about tackling the rise in violence plaguing our communities. As elected officials, it is up to us to do everything we can to provide for the health and safety of the people of our city — but listening to the constant drum beat of local leaders telling us that crime is down only leads to complacency and inaction. This cannot be our new normal. Only by bringing together community leaders, religious leaders and all like-minded individuals to form this task force can we identify the root causes of this pervasive violence and put a stop to this devastating trend before any other family has to experience the unspeakable pain of losing someone they love.”
