State Rep. Hertel Supportive of Call for State AI Task Force

LANSING — A group of attorneys representing those falsely accused by the state’s MiDAS fraud detection system held a press conference in Detroit this morning to call for restitution for their clients. The group also urged Gov. Whitmer to create a task force dedicated to assessing how the state uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) going forward. In response, state Rep. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores) issued the following statement:

“Those who were falsely accused of unemployment fraud lost their homes, vehicles and savings at a time they needed support the most. While technology can accelerate our ability to help Michiganders, it is not immune to errors. I hope the governor will create a task force to assess the state’s use of AI and ensure such glitches will never happen again. It is time for Legislative Leadership to act swiftly and include funding for a false fraud relief program in the budget to rectify the past administration’s mistakes.”
