About Rep. Rashida H. Tlaib
Rashida Tlaib was raised in Detroit and is the child of immigrants who taught her the importance of hard work, honesty and commitment to community. As the eldest of 14 children, she developed leadership qualities that make her responsible, caring and compassionate. Her family’s struggle to create a new life in Detroit inspired Rashida’s long-term commitment to public service and giving back to the community.
Although her work in Lansing is significant, Rashida’s most important accomplishment has been establishing her neighborhood service center, which has more than twelve different programs offered to low-income families and those who need help the most. Rashida is Michigan’s only legislator that has a fully staffed service center of this kind, which provides direct advocacy and services to residents such as free tax preparation and access to human services benefits. The service center represents Rashida’s commitment to making politics about improving the lives of people locally and across Michigan.
At home in Detroit, Rashida has aggressively pursued scrap metal thieves, challenged ineffective politicians, and taken a stand against corporate interests that threaten her community. Rashida has a stake in the lives of all of her neighbors and works tirelessly to provide effective and unfaltering advocacy to amplify the concerns of the people she serves. Whether it is leading a protest against school closings or laying down in the street to block truck traffic, Rashida’s hands-on approach to services strives to honor a commitment to justice above all else.
Rashida was elected to Michigan House of Representatives in 2008, where she quickly became a leader amongst her peers. Rashida was appointed as the democratic vice chairwoman of the Appropriation Committee, where she serves as the democratic vice chairwoman of the House Fiscal Governing Committee, Department of Human Services, and Department of Community Health Subcommittees. While participating in these valuable committees, she has worked on more than 30 bills combatting poverty, increasing access to human services, protecting our public health and environment, and promoting public safety and consumer protection.
Rashida received her bachelor’s in political science from Wayne State University in 1998. While working full-time, she attended weekend classes at Thomas Cooley Law School, where she earned her law degree in January 2004. Before being elected, Rashida worked at a number of nonprofit organizations, including the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) and the International Institute of Metro Detroit, where she advocated for better access to human services, education, and civil rights. Rashida has been recognized for her advocacy, and has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Role Model award from Alternatives for Girls, the Emerging Leader award from the National Network for Arab American Communities, Women of Wayne Headliners award, the CAIR Michigan’s Empowering Muslims award, Clean Water Hero from Clean Water Action, and she was recognized as one of Crain’s Detroit Business Women to Watch.
Rashida made history by becoming the first female Muslim elected to the Michigan Legislature, and only second in the country. Rashida has been married to her husband, Fayez, for 15 years. Together they have two sons, Adam and Yousif.
