LANSING – State Representative Fred Durhal Jr. (D-Detroit) was appointed to the House Appropriations Committee and was named Chair of the General Government Appropriations Subcommittee.
"I am thankful for the opportunity to serve on these committees," Durhal said. "As Chair of the General Government Appropriations Subcommittee, I will have a better understanding of the costs of government, allowing me to better serve the people of not only Detroit, but all of Michigan. In these harsh economic times, we need leaders who can make the tough decisions and do what's right for Michigan residents."
Durhal also was named Vice Chair of the Corrections Appropriations Subcommittee, and was appointed to the Investigations, Intergovernmental Affairs and Oversight Appropriations Subcommittee as well as the Joint Capital Outlay Appropriations Subcommittee. He will serve as Secretary of the Detroit Caucus and 1st Vice Chair of the Legislative Black Caucus.
"My top priorities are getting our economy back on track and our workers back on the job," Durhal said. "With the budget deficit Michigan is facing, we need to focus on the state programs that work and make cuts where they are needed. I will work tirelessly to turn our economy around and create an economic climate that will allow Michigan to prosper in the 21st century global economy."
